Tree Surgery
Scofell’s expert tree surgeons have the knowledge, qualifications and equipment to perform all aspects of tree surgery safely, efficiently and effectively, from site clearance to coppicing.
We usually look at things from the tree’s perspective, and generally aim to preserve a tree unless it is diseased or dangerous. We can carry out any tree-pruning method, including pollarding and crown lifting or reduction. We can perform one-off tree works or emergency branch removal but usually recommend a programme of regular inspections to decide the best course of action.
Tree Surgery Services
Our arborists are experienced in felling trees. We can carry out straight felling or, in more confined areas, section felling.
We are also used to felling under a watching brief of an ecologist, for instance, lowering the felled tree branch by branch in cases where bats might be nesting.
Some smaller formal trees and fruit trees require pruning every year or two. It’s important to choose the right pruning strategy for the type of tree.
Our arborists can provide expert advice on what needs pruning and when, and will prune as well as remove the dead wood, ensuring a balanced result without overstimulating regrowth.
Pollarding is used to restrict a tree to a certain height for reasons of space, aesthetics, or to prevent urban trees obstructing electric wires or streetlights. It involves removing the entire crown of the tree.
Our tree surgeons can offer advice and carry out pollarding where suitable, without damaging the health of the tree.
Visual inspections enable us to spot branches that are diseased or likely to fall and need removing. We also remove fallen branches that are caught in the tree, or branches that have fallen onto the ground.
We respond as quickly as we can to requests for branch removal, prioritising safety above all.
Scofell arborists can advise you on selectively removing the lower branches of a tree to give access for mowing, to give more clearance over a driveway or to unblock the view from a camera.
Branches will be removed to the most appropriate pruning points, so that the tree will remain healthy and grow well.
Our arborists are skilled in climbing even the tallest trees to carry out crown reduction, which involves reducing the height and spread of the crown of the tree.
All cuts will be made at the appropriate pruning positions, and we will ensure that the natural appearance of the tree is preserved.
Every year we plant thousands of trees, ranging from young bare-root plants to mature 40ft-tall oak trees. We can plant large or small trees to create woodland areas, or in urban settings to create an attractive environment.
We can also provide after-care, to ensure that the trees are properly maintained.
We manage many woodland areas in nature parks and on housing developments, and offer a coppicing programme, cutting certain trees at the base every few years and allowing them to regrow.
Coppicing not only extends the life of the trees but also increases woodland biodiversity, encouraging the growth of other species.
We work with many house builders and developers, and are experienced in clearing trees, shrubs and scrub before construction can begin.
We clear and remove all waste material. But we also encourage our clients to reuse material: chippings can be used on site for mulch, and we can stack waste timber to create eco habitat piles.
We have various sizes of wood-chipper, for dealing with various sizes of round wood and mixed brash.
We encourage our clients to reuse chippings on site for mulch where possible. Wood chippings that we remove from site are taken either to a recycling plant or to a farm to be used in a biomass boiler.
Stump grinding is the mechanical process of removing the stump of a tree that has been reduced to ground level. The site can then be put to whatever use is required, whether that’s planting a new tree, seeding a lawn, or building a house.
Our team members are trained in all aspects of stump grinding.
We like to leave surplus wood on site, to create eco habitats for wildlife. Where this is not possible, the surplus wood is turned into wood chippings, which are then used by landscaping teams, including our own.
Larger waste wood is sent to a biodigester on a farm and converted into energy.
Safety is always our top priority. If you have any concerns about your trees, or if you require a tree report, we can carry out various levels of inspection, from a visual inspection to a thorough tree survey.
We always perform a full risk assessment before starting any tree surgery.
We are experienced in the early identification of ash dieback, evaluating the risk and planning appropriate management. In the initial stages of the disease, we can take remedial action; at worst, we can fell or dismantle affected trees.
If you are concerned about your ash trees, please get in touch.
