Case Study
Scofell Landscapes looks after three hotels in the Vineyard Group near Newbury: the Vineyard, the Donnington Valley Hotel and the Post Barn. The initial brief from the Vineyard was to take on the maintenance of the grounds of all three hotels and restore them to their former glory, as they were before the pandemic.
Hotels are a very special type of client, whose grounds are often part of their attraction, especially high-end hotels such as those in the Vineyard Group. Smart presentation, colourful plants, well-mown lawns are all part of our grounds maintenance. Our smartly uniformed staff work unobtrusively, using rechargeable battery-operated tools where possible to minimise noise levels.
Both the Vineyard Group and Scofell are committed to creating biodiverse and sustainable landscapes, and this is shown at our work in these gardens. Scofell is working closely with the Vineyard managers to create a biodiverse environment on the site, for the enjoyment of clients, staff – and wildlife.
Scofell’s highly trained horticulturalists are using traditional and sustainable horticultural techniques to enhance the Vineyard’s high-profile garden.

The Vineyard
The Vineyard is a prestigious five-star hotel on the outskirts of Newbury.
We are setting up a herb and kitchen garden to supply produce for the hotel’s chefs, which will also help reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint.
We are planting new flowers and shrubs, to create year-round interest and colour, and to encourage beneficial insects, birds, invertebrates and mammals, and to create suitable habitats.
And we have introduced water catchment and on-site composting.
Donnington Valley Hotel
Scofell Landscapes is restoring, enhancing and maintaining the grounds of this popular, high-profile four-star hotel.
The Donnington Valley Hotel prides itself on offering a special experience in an attractive venue. Scofell is helping to make the hotel’s grounds an idyllic setting. It’s a busy hotel, so we make sure we carry out our work efficiently but don’t get in the way of the guests.
The gardens contain a mixture of shrubs, lawns, seasonal flowering displays, with hanging baskets and numerous alfresco areas, one of which features a herb garden and half-standard box plants. There are also mature beech hedges, which our Scofells team keep trimmed.
Work in progress and future plans includes creating a wildflower area, a kitchen garden, and replanting exterior plant displays, to provide interest for guests and wildlife all year round.
The Post Barn
The Post Barn is a stunning wedding and party venue in Berkshire. It’s a newly built oak-framed barn, featuring both classical and contemporary architectural design, set in its own large private grounds, which include terraces, lawn and a sunken garden.
Scofell was chosen to carry out a landscaping scheme for this high-profile venue.
Our horticulturalists chose plant material to create a year-round wedding atmosphere, featuring numerous Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’, fragrant climbing roses, shrubs, herbaceous perennials and seasonal flowering bulbs to give interest and colour.
Having carried out the landscaping, Scofell now maintains the gardens of the Post Barn, working closely with the client, to create an unforgettable experience for weddings and corporate events.
